SAE International

SAE International is dedicated to progress in mobility technologies. The company operates as a not-for-profit organisation for technology and science. From its origins in the creation of standards in the automobile industry, SAE International is now active worldwide in the in the creations of standards in all forms of mobility.

History of SAE International

The company was founded collaboratively in 1905 by 30 members. The first president was Andrew L. Riker, a pioneer in the automobile sector and a successful racing driver. The vice-president was Henry Ford, Founder of the Ford Motor Company. Originally SAE International was known as the „Society of Automobile Engineers“.

The first task of the company was the develop of standards for the automobile industry. Further to this was the promotion of knowledge transfer and exchange.

The following years were characterised by a constant expansion of SAE, whose membership had already grown to 1800 people by 1916. The organisation made its name in this period through the publication of specialist articles and journals, which continue to exist to this day in a modified form. The 1916 SAE-Konferenz also resulted in the decision to broaden the activities of the society to include all forms of mechanical propulsion, which was reflected in the first name change to become the “Society of Automotive Engineers”.

During the First World War, SAE was led by inventor Charles Kettering, who was able to achieve a further growth in membership, as well as the creation of local branches. After 1945 the organisation dedicated itself more strongly to the implementation of its global ambitions, firstly through forging contacts with related societies and also by opening locations in countries like China, Russia and Brazil.

Since the 1980s SAE – analogue to the mobility sector itself – underwent a transformation towards greater globalisation and diversification. As a result there was a large increase in member number inside and outside the USA.

With the end of the Second World War SAE International began a global collaboration with other organisations dedicated to standardisation in Mobility.

The SAE Standards

The company has now developed nearly 10,000 standards which are established as guiding rules in the automobile and aerospace industries. The most important standards are the series SAE J, SAE AS, SAE AMS and SAE USCAR. These standards are developed in over 240 technical SAE Committees The are supported by more than 450 working groups.

SAE Standards support Engineers, experts in the Mobility Sector, technical experts in the aerospace industry and experts in the automobile industry, in particularly in the commercial vehicle industry. The standards are now essential.

SAE topic areas

The subject areas of the company have been constantly evolving. In this respect, the domain of Environment, Fuels and Energy Sources is an essential and future-proof area. The development of Standards in the area of Transport systems, Vehicles and Performance is as always an essential part of the programme, which is complemented byConstruction, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Avionics. Quality, reliability and durability of materials are also being improved through SAE standards.

We can gladly support you in your cooperation with SAE International! Please contact us and let us advise you how we can help.

    The ASME Codes

The ASME Codes document and give specific requirements for materials, construction, pressure capacity, leak rate, inspection and tests in different areas such as flange fittings (ASME B16.5), valves (ASME B16.20), process piping (ASME B31.3), power piping (ASME B31.1), steel piping (ASME B36.10).

    ASME in figures

    ASME Flanges / ASME B16.5

ASME B16.5 describes the requirements for flanges, coils, connectors and fittings for use in pressure lines and other systems that connect different devices. Furthermore the ASME B16.5 standard defines the materials to be used to flanges, coils, connectors and fittings, including alloys, carbon steels and stainless steels. ASME B16.5 regulates together with its dimensions and tolerances the dimensional profile for flanges, coils, connectors and fittings. Furthermore it describes the requirements of pressure capacity and leak rate for flanges, coils, connectors and fittings.

    ASME B16.20

ASME B16.20 contains requirements for expansion joints and fittings that are used in pressure line and other systems. ASME B16.20 defines the requirements for materials that should be used for expansions joints and fittings, including alloys, carbon steels and stainless steels. Furthermore it defines the dimensional profile, and their sizes and tolerances, of connectors and fittings. Also defined in ASME B16.20 are the requirements of pressure capacity and leak rate for expansion joints and fittings.

    ASME B31.3

ASME B31.3 describes the requirements for process piping, particularly in the context of the petrochemical and chemical industries. ASME B31.3 includes the requirements for materials, that should be used for process piping, including carbon steels, stainless steels, alloys and non-ferrous metals.

Furthermore ASME B31.3 defines the construction and manufacturing requirements for process piping, including the choice of suitable structural shape, of suitable welding processes and of the monitoring of welding works. Also it contains the requirements for pressure capacity and leak rate for process piping.

ASME B31.3 describes requirements on inspections and testing for process pipiing, together with the supervision of materials testing, pressure testing and final inspection.

    ASME B31.1

ASME B31.1 describes the requirements for piping in power stations, including steam and condensation systems, heat transport and cooling systems, oil and gas piping systems. Additionally ASME B31.1 sets the standard for materials, including carbon steels, stainless steels, alloys and non-ferrous metals, that should be used for piping in power stations.

Alongside the construction and manufacturing requirements for piping in power stations, ASME B31.1 also defines the choice of suitable structural shape, of suitable welding processes and of the monitoring of welding works.

ASME B31.1 also standardises the pressure capacity and leak rate for piping in power stations. It also defines requirements to be adhered to for inspection and testing of piping in power stations, as well as the monitoring of materials testing, pressure testing and final inspection.

    ASME B36.10

The standard ASME B36.10 describes requirements for steel pipelines, which are used in the petrochemical and chemical industries.

The ASME B36.10 standardises requirements for materials, which should be used for steel pipelines, including carbon steels, stainless steels and alloys. Additionally it defines the construction and manufacturing criteria for steel pipelines. This includes the choice of suitable structural shape, of suitable welding processes and of the monitoring of welding works. In this context ASME B36.10 also describes the exact requirements on pressure capacity and leak rates for steel pipelines.

ASME B36.10 also sets out the requirements for inspections and testing of steel pipelines. This also covers the monitoring of materials testing, pressure testing and final inspection.

    ASME Section VIII

ASME Section VIII is an important part of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (ASME BPVC). This chapter of section 8 gives rules for the construction of pressure vessels. Key here are especially the requirements for the construction, manufacture, testing and monitoring of pressure vessels. Section VIII also describes the tolerances to be respected in the construction and use of pressure vessels, as well as the requirements on manufacture inspection and monitoring.

Pressure vessels are used for a large number of industrial purposes, including in the energy, oil and gas industries, in the chemical and petrochemical industries, and in other industrial processes.

Please note:ASME Section VIII is is an important reference for everyone who works in the construction, manufacture, testing and monitoring of pressure vessels, in order to ensure a safe and reliable operation.
