In order to strengthen public trust in scientific work, the IEEE participates in international education initiatives. UNESCO <\/a>, for example, uses the International Day of Light (held annually on May 16) to promote awareness of the role of light in science, technology, culture and education. The founding partners of the “Trust Science Pledge” initiative include the IEEE Photonics Society, SPIE and the Optical Society (OSA). Scientific impact of the IEEE – influence on patents and technology development<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The study Analysis of US Patent<\/a> Referencing to IEEE Papers<\/a>, Conferences, and Standards 1999-2019 clearly shows: New technologies are increasingly based on scientific publications – and IEEE contributions are cited most frequently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between 1999 and 2019, more than 104,000 patents were granted to the 50 leading US companies. These patents contained a total of over 800,000 references to scientific articles, conference papers and standards: a significant proportion of them from the IEEE environment. For comparison: in 2010, the average was still 4.13 contributions per patent, while in 2019 it had already reached 7.71 contributions per patent. These figures illustrate the growing influence of scientific research on technical innovations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The study also examined forward-looking topics such as blockchain, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, in which IEEE publications are particularly relevant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Access to knowledge – new digital resources:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In addition to traditional publications, the IEEE now also offers digital specialist resources such as working papers, videos, newsletters and online courses. It started with two platforms of the IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) – one of the largest discussion forums in the international energy industry. The Society also develops relevant standards for energy and grid systems. Two offerings are currently in the beta phase: the PES Resource Center and the Smart Grid Resource Center. Low-cost entry-level licenses are currently available for institutions, with more Resource Centers to follow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers is also involved in the field of electromobility. The special report “Powering Next-Gen Electric Vehicles” from the Tech Briefs Media Group (SAE International) is dedicated to topics such as battery technology, wireless charging and electric drives.
